ABOUT
Welcome to a vision for the future.
What I do.
I help schools create inclusive cultures that celebrate racial and religious diversity. I do this in a number of ways but most fundamentally I design frameworks that schools can use to ensure their inclusion work is structured and coherent. What makes inclusion unlike most other school improvement priorities is that it requires a systemwide commitment. This means all components of a school system must work together to ensure the inclusion drive is successful. My frameworks help educators consider their inclusion practice through all necessary ‘lenses’ to ensure strategic clarity across all school systems. This consistency is vital in ensuring the entire school system moves forward together, and the only way to create a lasting culture change. My framework consists of a document I design for schools to work through on their inclusion journey, allowing them to build effective strategy, track progress and ensure constant growth.
My experience.
As a qualified counsellor, I supported the mental health needs of thousands of young people in schools for over a decade. During this time, I noticed a common thread that ran through the experience of students of colour/faith I worked with. Many of these students held very limiting beliefs about who they were and what they could achieve. This naturally affected their learning. This led me on a journey of discovery about why these common strands were so prevalent amongst this particular demographic. After conducting research in multiple schools, I fundamentally found one thing; schools that had a much more obvious and clear inclusion ethos were more likely to produce a much more engaged, confident and aspirational cohort of students of colour/faith. Seeing first-hand how suppressed identity can lead to academic underachievement, I have since worked with multiple schools to help them understand and tackle this issue.
My vision.
My vision for the future is one in which every school has a robust and structured approach to inclusion as part of its wider school improvement priorities. Without an intentional approach, many students holding the protected characteristics of race and religion/belief may not reach their true potential. Inclusion not only benefits those it intends to directly impact, but it also creates a better space for the wider school community. If we are able to educate the wider student body on matters of race and religion, we have the potential to create a future generation of adults who push to create social change side-by-side. In light of the increasingly polarised society we find ourselves in, it has never been a more crucial time to ensure we plant the seeds of togetherness amongst our future generation. I believe passionately in making this happen and helping schools undertake this complex but hugely rewarding challenge.
